What causes nephritic syndrome? There are many conditions that may cause nephritic syndrome, and it can occur in people of all ages. Common causes are infections, immune system disorders and inflammation of the blood vessels. The main symptoms are passing less urine than normal, leading to a fluid buildup in the body, and having blood in the urine. Why does proteinuria cause edema? Foamy urine and swelling (edema) are two signs of proteinuria that become more evident as the disease progresses. Excess protein can cause the urine to foam in water. Reduced albumin level in the blood causes fluid retention and swelling that is first noticeable in the hands, lower legs, and feet. Does minimal change disease go away? Minimal Change Disease is one of the more treatable kidney diseases, especially in children. A complete remission is not uncommon, though the disease can come back later in life. Patients with recurrent MCD, or with MCD that does not completely resolve with steroids, may require other forms of chemotherapy. Is nephrotic syndrome a chronic kidney disease? Nephrotic syndrome is not a specific kidney disease. It can occur in any kidney disease that damages the filtering units in a certain way that allows them to leak protein into the urine. Other diseases that cause nephrotic syndrome, such as diabetes and lupus, affect other parts of the body as well. Is nephrotic syndrome life threatening? A syndrome is a group of symptoms that often occur together and typically develop as a result of another condition or underlying medical problem. While the prognosis is usually quite good, nephrotic syndrome can become severe and even potentially life - threatening, if left untreated.
